The Crazy Night
By: Scott Heptinstall on Monday February 18, 2008

After a long day of fishing on Melton Hill we got back home and relaxed for a bit. We realized there was a huge front coming that night, so we decided to take a night fishing trip in February. We launched the boat at Edgemore Road, and went to the marina and caught a little bass and decided to leave and go catfishing. We started off on the main channel at the mouth of Beaver Creek. We didn't really catch much, we had a few bites, but thats about it. We decided to wait for David to wake up as he enjoyed his hour and a half nap, and catch some more shad in the morning to do some more smallmouth fishing. Once day break the sun came up and we were able to catch a bunch of shad. We went to a few of the same places as the day before and caught some better fish. David hooked into a really nice smallie and a largemouth on the same bank. The smallmouth was 19in and weighed about 3.85lbs. The largemouth was 17in and weighed about 3lbs. Overall it was a decent 2 days of fishing, we caught about 6 keepers, 2 of which were smallmouth over 18in. All together we caught about 20 fish.

Decent day on Melton Hill Lake
By: David Heptinstall on Monday February 18, 2008

Saturday morning we launched the boat at Carbide Park on Melton Hill Lake. We decided to throw the casting net and catch us a few shad. We found most of our shad at the mouth of Beaver Creek. Once we caught some shad we did a little smallmouth fishing in Beaver Creek, nothing was really hitting, so we went down the lake a little ways to one of my honey holes. Scott hooked into a really nice Smallie on a bluff and it was boated. The Fish measured 18 1/4in and weighed about 3 lbs. A few moments later I had picked up a spinner bait and threw it in a tree on the bluff and caught a 16in Largemouth. Throughout the day, we caught numerous fish in the 12-15in range. Most fish were caught by free lining shad on main channel bluffs in 5-20 foot of water. Water Temp was in the low 50's.
